Graham Hartill

Biography

Graham Hartill was born in the industrial West Midlands in 1952. As a teenager he was fascinated by avant-garde music and theatre and staged a few chaotic performances. He moved to Wales, worked as a performer and installation artist and went on to study in the USA. On his return he began to assimilate the influences of American open-field poetry and became a mainstay of the burgeoning poetry scene in Cardiff. He now lives in the Black Mountains, works as a writer-in-residence at HMP Parc, Bridgend, South Wales and teaches on the Creative Writing for Therapeutic Purposes MSc for the Metanoia Institute. In 2013 he became the first Writer-in-Residence at Swansea College of Medicine.

Graham has published widely: poetry, articles, papers on facilitation and co-translations from classical Chinese.

Reviews

On “Cennau’s Bell”, Selected Poems:

'A very fine book indeed – one which, at times, suggests that Hartill may be not just a good poet, but a major one.' - Matthew Jarvis in Poetry Wales

'Hartill’s eye for telling detail and texture enlarges to take in different landscapes and urban complexes. This is a remarkable work, an individual spectrum of poetic expression which outstrips many other attempts to give lyric voice to mythic characters.' - Chris Torrance, poet

'Literary space, the simplicity and elegance of his words in their groups, echoes the very spaces and washes of light that enhance his explorations perpetually. This is the virtuoso work of  a sophisticated craftsman.' - Jeff Nuttall, artist, poet, actor, critic

'Poems that call for meditative reading, essentially spiritual modes of attention…the reader is invited to engage with the significance of cultural emblems and perceptions beyond familiar European norms. The poems contained in Cennau’s Bell are especially relevant to the task of ‘imagining Wales’ as one of the world’s most vibrant and deep-rooted cultures.' - Anne Cluysennaar, poet, artist, lecturer
